Favorite characters from books, movies and television shows serve as an inspiration for Halloween costumes. The popularity of Harry Potter among children makes a wizard cloak an obvious choice. Costume designers predict that Harry Potter inspired Halloween costumes will continue to be in style for years to come.

You can choose a costume to imitate Harry Potter himself or any character in the book. Hogwarts fun is not just for kids. There are also Harry Potter costumes for adults. There are costumes available that copy the wardrobes worn by witch and wizard professors. Villains such as dementors and Voldemort are also a popular choice among older kids.

There are basics if you want to create a Harry Potter inspired costume for yourself or your children. The most basic and recognizable item is the robe or wizard cloak. It should be long, black and flowing for a dramatic billowing effect. A hood to cover your head is optional.

If you want to dress up as Harry Potter or any one of his friends, wear a long black cloak with a burgundy lining. To make it more recognizable, attach a Gryffindor crest on the front. The crest is a scarlet and gold image of a lion to symbolize courage and bravery.

Another option for the cloak is the Quidditch robe. It is different from the cloaks that the students wear in school. The playing robe is an ankle-length crimson robe with yellow lining. Carry a broom to play the part of a seeker, chaser, beater, or keeper.

A wand is a must-have item to complete the look. You can choose any woody stick that is either straight or distorted. Of course, a lightning scar drawn on your forehead and glasses are important elements if you want to be recognized as the boy who lived.

A simple button down shirt can be worn under the cloak. Wear it with simple black pants and a matching tie. The color of the tie will denote the Hogwarts house of your choice. The tie should be scarlet and gold for Gryffindor, green and silver for Slytherin, yellow and black for Hufflepuff, and blue and bronze for Ravenclaw. You can also wear a scarf if you are dressing up as a wizard student.
